Lecture 11 - Fashion Photography

Fashion as Photography:


Catalogue and product photography - 
the ghost mannequin - resembles the human form


The fixing process was invented by William Henry Fox Talbot


Virginia Oldini (Countress di Castilione) Photographed by Adolphe Brown 
in 1856 and then published a book containing a content of 288 images


She looked to recreate her own life in the media of photography


Fashion Magazines:
There was huge advancements with the introduction of halftone printing


From the late 19th century there was a huge change moving into the early 20th century
Paul Poiret - free from corset - signature shapes


Edward Steichen - High fashion - main focus being on materials

Leaders in fashion photography  in the 20's and 30's 
Hoyningen - Heure 1931 Madame Vionnet 
Horst P Horst - The costume for Salvador Dalis ( Dreams of Venus) in 1939


Cecil Beaton - in (1909 - 1980) was a memeber of Bright young things


Environment Photography - is used to display and show off wealth 


Lee Miller (1907 - 1977) he became a photographer of war 


Then visited Paris in 1929 with Man Ray who was a big part of the surrealist movement
