A History of Advertising
This lecture looked at how the large scale colour print technology developed throughout the 19th Century. Went onto the creation of the first soap advertisements for Lever Bros

Bill Bernbach - first to combine copywriters and art directors
Lever brothers founded 1885
Unilever owns 900 brands now including Ben & Jerry's and Birdseye
Lever born 1851, the same year as The Great Exhibition (Crystal Palace, London)
Advertising is 'an essential component of any competitive market economy'
Packaging:
During the 1960s Companies that produce cereal went onto discover discovered how to print, cut and fold boxes mechanically and to mass produce these.
Lever was the first to package and brand soap by doing this he added a
much higher value to the product.
As you can see the advertisement promotes a very high quality, this is all down to the packaging design and the imagery that the package displays.
During the 1980's, due to the advancements of technology the companies realised that they could reproduce the contemporary paintings that where once single issues.

where created in 1851
Advertising transformed sunlight soap from a local manufacturer to one of the first brands to be come multinational
The use of paintings was a huge development and a radical chance in advertising.
