Design For Print_ Printer visit: Pressision:

Pressision: Industrial Printer Visit

Today i visited Pressission print studio: this is a local print studio based in leeds- the companies speciality is Litho priting, digital  and finishing processes, from embossing to foiling and de bossing ect. The visit was very benificial for me in giving me a greater understanding of how the process works. The staff where very helpful and where very generous with samples.

Notes from the visit:
Clients and costing:
the client rings Ian and starts to explain what is wanted usually then work backwards to what is affordable on the clients behalf.

No minimum run, can even print one off's - this could be something to look into when printing my print production manual.

Once a quote is processed, its the artwork and Pre flight step, small things like fullstops that are out of place and letters that drop of the printed area. The file is proofed and then sent back to the client to make sure everything is perfect and ready for printing.

Litho Proofs: there are no spot colours used. on the proofs that are sent out. In some cases the proofs are sent out as PDF files  and sometimes actually printed no spot colours are used to not only to reduce the costing but also as it is impractical.

Foiling Proofs:
These are done using clear plastic and is lined up with the paper.

Inkjet Prints are used for proofs as this is close to the colours achieved with litho, making this effective for proofs to get an overall understanding of what the document will look like:
Digital Press, Konica or Indigo printer.

Digital press - Cost effective

FSC Credited paper - Ordering paper for print jobs, chain of custody, this allows you to find out where the paper was milled - bought from just to make sure you can find out and know the stock is from a sustainable source. this is basically showing the original primary source of materials for legitimacy and some people love this. this can be a huge aspect to your design.

Overflow Paper: Paper that is never used for FSC paper, this is usually used for marking and lining up, setting up a job before the final stock is used - saving money.

Litho Printers - Spot colour in the 5th unit. some clients may have process colours plus 3-4 spot colours, usually on a litho - there is one spot colour at the end so the work is passed through individually, for each separate spot colour. This is almost like individual silkscreen printing - But with much more consistency:

Ink Level Adjuster - Comparing Proof  to the finished product,
Flourescents and Metallics can be a reason to use spot colours, colour changes on different stocks so this must always be taken into account.

For example 7404C and 7404U is the same colour but taking into account coated and un coated stock and the colour appeares different once printed. A lot of variables can come into play when printing, even when using spot colours. even temperature can have and effect on the appearance of colour
After this print process, the print moves onto the Finishing Process.

Die Cut - the sheet is pressed between the cutting form and a roller stamp cutting the paper.

Foiling - Blocks are used to create the foiling, heat is applied to the block  this then transfers the foil onto the stock.

The blocks are most commonly made from brass and uses the negative impression, this is more economical to be made from brass.
Stitching machine for finishing processes such as binding.

I have learnt a great technique today when creating net designs with a fold - it makes so much sense now but before i was un aware of this technique - the inside fold is to be made 1mm shorter than the rest to create a flush fold. The amount of give i allow will vary depending on the weight of the stock.

When receiving the artwork - the work will be layed out in the most economic way possible minimising the amount of stock wastage. Once the work is proofed it is then transferred to plates separate plates for each colour.

Ink attracts to the image areas and the water cleans away the rest of the ink.

Specs - Email with mock jobs for a quote or idea on costing.
